The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs because of the risk of a potentially dangerous drug interaction. The safety of Viagra has been established through a review of data from more than 4,000 patients.
The FDA issued a public safety advisory Wednesday, stating that the increased risk of sexual side effects associated with the use of the popular erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis may be due to inadequate blood flow to the penis.
The agency did not directly address the issue of Viagra’s potential interaction with Cialis, but noted that it has found other drugs to increase the risk of side effects, including the blood thinner warfarin, which is commonly prescribed to men with type 2 diabetes.
According to a FDA letter, the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to purchase ED drugs without a prior authorization from a physician.
In an emailed statement, the agency said it is taking additional action to protect consumers, particularly those without a licensed practitioner and those with a history of psychiatric disorders or taking medications that may increase the risk of side effects.
Consumers who purchased Cialis without prior authorization from Cialis and Viagra in 2011 may still experience the side effects noted in the letter. These side effects include headache, dizziness, nasal congestion, indigestion and facial flushing.
“The FDA is reviewing the safety and efficacy data submitted by the company and will take appropriate steps to ensure the safety and effectiveness of these drugs,” the agency said in a statement. “The agency continues to monitor these patients and is working with our other stakeholders to address any concerns or uncertainties that may arise.”
